At first humans just had to protect themselves from the environment Caves were the shelters and any cloth available to get was from the animals they hunted. In those times, when wearing a skin meant they had to hunt, kill and eat the animal, the bigger the skin, the more important the person was. Because it was a status of power when someone was strong enough to hunt a big animal. Wearing its skin was of course a necessity, there were no other way of staying warm at night, but it also could mean a way of status. Being a big person and wearing a huge animal skin, probably was as fancy as you could get in those times where everything was all starting.

If we move forward in time a couple of thousand years, we can consider the Greeks and Romans. They used just simple togas, which were loose garments, covering the whole body with just one piece. It was very simple, and everyone used that. However, the distinction was in the accessories. In this era, creating things of gold and having jewel in the accessories was very rare. Only rich people could afford wearing these types of accessories. You would still wear a toga just like everyone else, but with bracelets of gold or necklaces of pearls. Same luxury as we have today, but, with the main difference that it was exclusive of nobility.

Another era in history that would give us many fancy dress costume ideas is the renaissance. In this era, dresses were very ahead in the fashion industry. Wearing a big dress was a sign of luxury. Of course it had to go accompanied by elegant accessories, but the size and design of the dress was very important. In this time, tailors were very coveted, because their designs would mark the trend of fashion everywhere. It wouldn’t be very bold to say that fashion as we know it, started in this time. This was as fancy as they could get voluptuous spongy hair and tight corsets and big skirts. Just imagine yourself coming down the stairs of the mansion with all that setting as the duchess of some important place.

As we can see, it all changes from time to time. Right now, in this era, getting a fancy dress is something that can be achieved in many ways. Fashion trends give us many possibilities of styles and provide us with the ideas to wear something that is hip and new.
